Sometimes it seems impossible to know how to mix and match checks with stripes with tweeds....here is a great article I found that breaks it down into several easy steps.
Personally, I think you can never go wrong with polka dots, paisley, or foulard prints for ties. Stripe and check shirts will always be a classic (and for instant vintage appeal, get one with a contrasting white cuff & collar). Herringbone tweeds in tan, gray, and brown. The classic trouser in navy, gray, and brown.
There are so many basics, that when paired correctly can give you instant pazzazz.
